Understanding the Test Server

One of the benefits of using OpenTrack is the availability of our test server, where you can practice any aspect of competition setup without the risk of affecting any live or existing competitions.

How the Test Server Works

Each morning at around 03:00 UK time, a copy of OpenTrack's live database is taken, and replicated on the test server.

This is then available to play with on the test server for 24 hours, until it is overwritten the following morning with the latest copy of live data.

All users have exactly the same permissions and access they have on the live server, using the same username and password to log in.

Accessing the Test Version of an OpenTrack Page

If you are on a live OpenTrack page, you will have a URL that looks like data.opentrack.run/, or wales.opentrack.run/, for example.

To head to the test version of the page, just add 'test-' to the beginning of the URL to give test-data.opentrack.run/, or test-wales.opentrack.run/.

Test Server Limitations

Permissions

If you have recently been granted access to manage an organisation or competition on OpenTrack, this will not be the case on the test server until the morning after you are given the access on the live server, due to the test server's daily updates.

You can always get in touch if you need access sooner, as we can add this for you manually.

Emails

By design, the test server will not send out emails. This is to avoid erroneous emails going out when users are testing, i.e. bulk emails going out while testing mass mailing features, or entry confirmation emails going out while testing the entry process.

However, this also means that some activities that generate useful emails on the live server, like email notification when large downloads are ready, or when club sync processes are complete, do not give email confirmation on the test server.

Visibility

While very few people look at our test server, it is completely public, in the same manner as the live server. The competition configuration options to show/hide various elements of your competition will still work as expected though.
